Honour your teachers on Guru Purnima

Life offers many teachers in many different forms. We can recognise and honour all our teachers during the full moon of Guru Purnima.

Guru Purnima occurs on a full moon in the middle of summer, around July. On this full moon, we remember all those who brought into our consciousness the light of knowledge that dispels the darkness of ignorance. It is an auspicious day dedicated to all our gurus and teachers.

Spiritual guides are not the only gurus we could have in our lives – teachers come in many forms. Parents are the first teachers, from teaching our first words to guiding our first steps in life. School teachers give us an education that can help us find our calling and the skills necessary for service in this world. Colleagues offer us the opportunity to work as a team, offer additional learning and challenge us to give our best. Friends offer support and advice by sharing their life experience with us. Enemies offer challenges that invite us to transform ourselves from the lessons we can learn. Everyone we meet has the potential to guide us closer to the fulfillment of our life’s purpose, both material and spiritual.

On this day, we make a conscious effort to recognise and honour all those who have brought light into our life path through their love, teachings and inspiration. It is through the grace of our teachers that we are guided towards ultimate wisdom, inner fulfillment and joy.

Let this day serve as a reflection on the teachers who have illuminated your path. Let your heart fill with gratitude for the contribution they have given to your life, which has helped you become who you are today. .

At the Lotus Room, during the Living in Harmony Meditation dedicated to Guru Purnima, we chant the mantra that is most closely associated with honouring our teachers.
