If inspiration, creativity, knowledge and communication were one power, they would be goddess Saraswati. Discover Ma Saraswati in this 3-minute read.
Ma Saraswati is the power of all that is inspiration, creativity, knowledge and communication; she is in music, the arts, language, philosophy, science and technology. She is depicted riding a swan and playing a veena, a string instrument.
According to Hindu mythology and yoga, Shakti, pure energy (feminine) and Purusha, pure consciousness (masculine) take on various roles to create the world of form as we know it. Saraswati is the counterpart of Brahma, the creator.
Saraswati is the natural spontaneous flow of inspiration. Think of a jamming session between musicians, the dancer who allows the music to flow through him, the artist with his pen and the poet with his words.
Her name means “she who flows,” just like a river which is said to flow from the heavens, but which runs so far below ground that it remains invisible. In the same way, the creative instinct is impossible to perceive until it rises spontaneously, in a moment of stillness of mind and connection of heart, when it can be unleashed and sometimes takes over.
As an awakening force, Saraswati manifests as intuition and insight. But Saraswati is also the force of creativity, whereby the arts, philosophy, science and technology take form. She is the power of knowledge, the force of communication and the mastery of music, language and words.
Saraswati gives us an opportunity to renew our creativity. We are able to release anything that’s holding us back from our creativity. She enables us to learn and to use knowledge and skills to bring forth further inspiration.
Saraswati is honoured and invoked during the festival of Vasant Panchami, which usually falls in early late January to early February. Vasant Panchami is a day to align with the energy and qualities of Ma Saraswati.
Join us at the Lotus Room for the Living in Harmony Meditation dedicated to this holiday to prepare for creativity and knowledge in your life. We let go of the old and make space for the new in our life and mind and invite Saraswati to reside therein.

Who is adorned in radiant white abre, on whose beautiful arm rests the veena and whose throne is a white lotus;
Who is surrounded and respected by the Gods and Goddesses, protect me.
May you fully remove my lethargy, sluggishness, and ignorance.”
