Chakra literally means “wheel” in the ancient language of Sanskrit. Chakras are energy centres located within the body, and consist of spirals that combine spiritual energy and psychophysical energy. Each one influences and is influenced by all the different aspects of our being: body, mind, emotion, energy, and breath.

  1. Root Chakra ~ Muladhara Chakra

In its positive state, we feel “We are One,” connected with the natural world and everything in it. We experience the qualities of groundedness and trust in the absolute perfection of what is. In its negative state, we feel separation from others and experience selfishness and insecurity.

An imbalanced Muladhara chakra causes physical symptoms related to the skeleton, rectum and immune system.

  1. Sacral Chakra ~ Svadisthana Chakra

In its positive state, we “Honour One Another,” feeling tolerance and harmony with others. In its negative state, we experience over indulgence in food or sex and issues related to possession and control.

An imbalance in the Svadisthana Chakra causes physical symptoms related to the abdomen and lower back.

  1. Solar Plexus Chakra ~ Manipura Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra is located between the navel and the bottom of the sternum, about two fingers above the navel. The vibration of this chakra has the form of a lotus with ten petals and is yellow in colour.

In its positive state, we “Honour Oneself,” authentic to our individual truth and personal boundaries. In its negative state, we experience low self-esteem and self-destructive behaviour.

An imbalance in the Manipura Chakra causes physical symptoms related to stress, the proper function of the organs located in that area and eating disorders.

  1. Heart Chakra ~ Anahata Chakra

The Heart Chakra is located in the centre of the chest, on the sternum. The vibration of this chakra has the form of a lotus with twelve petals and is green in colour.

In its positive state, we feel that “Love is Divine Power.” We experience the qualities of acceptance, compassion and unconditional love. In its negative state, we experience issues related to loneliness, grief, guilt and forgiveness.

An imbalance in the Anahata Chakra causes physical symptoms related to the cardiovascular system.

  1. Throat Chakra ~ Vishuddhi Chakra

The Throat Chakra is located between the collar bone and the larynx on the neck. The vibration of this chakra has the form of a lotus with sixteen petals and is blue in colour.

In its positive state, we “Surrender Own Will to Divine Will,” serving the highest truth with our words and actions. In its negative state, we experience issues related to judgement of self and others, faith and willpower. A deficiency of energy in this chakra can make us feel fearful and unable to communicate, while excess energy may cause arrogance and excessive talking.

An imbalance in the Vishuddi Chakra causes physical symptoms related to the throat, mouth and neck.

  1. Brow Chakra ~ Ajna Chakra

The Brow Chakra, or Third Eye, is located at the centre of the brow. The vibration of this chakra has the form of a lotus with two petals and is indigo in colour.

In its positive state, we “Seek only the Truth,” using intuition, intellect and reasoning to help us discern between truth and speculation or illusion. In its negative state, we experience issues related to feelings of self-doubt, emotional intelligence and the ability to learn from experience.

An imbalance in the Ajna Chakra causes physical symptoms related to the brain and the nervous system

Crown Chakra ~ Sahasara Chakra

The Crown Chakra is located just beyond the top of the head; it is actually located within our subtle body not within the physical body. The vibration of this chakra has the form of a lotus with a thousand petals and is violet in colour.

In its positive state, we “Live in the Present Moment,” letting go of fears and concern with past and future to live in the presence of the Divine. We develop a constant relationship with the Divine in the here and now. In its negative state, we experience issues related to the ability to see the bigger pattern and a lack of service orientation.

An imbalance in the Sahasara Chakra causes physical symptoms related to energy levels, sensory sensitivity and depression.

The ability to sense and balance these subtle energy centres within our body is activated through yoga, meditation, mantra and various life practices. Working with chakras opens us to the vast field of the inner body and facilitates intense awareness and healing.
