Create a sacred space at home where you can find your inner peace, motivation for your practice and perfect balance.
A sacred space is a focal point for your yoga practice and any spiritual practice. It is a space you begin to associate with your internal journey through life and beyond.
Having a sacred space at home can serve you and your practice in several ways:
A sacred space is your temple
It is not always easy to be self disciplined to practice yoga and meditation daily, as there are so many distractions, you may feel tired or simply do not feel like it. The space provides the motivation to leave it all behind, to enter the space and return to conscious presence. It is a reminder turn your mind away from the mundane and focus on your inner world as a daily practice.
Return to inner peace and balance
Gradually, you begin to associate the sacred space with the sense of peace you achieve during your practice. It is a space that comforts, inspires and motivates you, no matter what is going on in your life. This space serves to help you tune in to your essence, untainted by the activities in the world. It prepares you to head out into the world with calm, strength and balance.
Recharge and serve
Eventually, the sacred space may begin to feel like an important refuge and pick-me-up. Keep the space clean and pour love and devotion into it during your practice. When you charge the space with your practice, it will act like a battery and radiate spiritual vibrations which help you recharge. Your sacred space helps you feel full again so that you are more able to serve wholeheartedly.
Remember why you are here
A sacred space may contain an altar that reflects your inner world and your aspirations – what you are calling into your life. On your altar, you may place objects that are meaningful to you and which help you remember your ideal and attune to it.
Create your sacred space!
- Find a suitable area in your home that is away from noise or distractions. Ideally there should be a space to sit or even roll out your yoga mat, but it could also be a window sill or a shelf that acts as an altar.
- Place items that make you feel connected, grounded and relaxed. For example, you may place your favourite crystals, stones, branches, leaves, flowers, shells, feathers and other things derived from nature. You may wish to include an inspiring picture, and AUM symbol or an image or statue of your favourite deity. Include holy water, a candle and incense. You may also add auspicious items such as sandalwood, holy ashes from a sacred fire, holy clay from a tirtha or the soil from a holy place.
- Keep your meditation cushion and yoga mat nearby. If the space allows, leave your yoga mat unrolled – ready for yoga practice – to motivate you.
- Choose a time of day – before you start the day or at the end of the day work well – to always visit your sacred space. Stipulate a minimum amount of time you will spend there, even if you begin with just ten or twenty minutes a day and work your way up. It can take time to develop a good habit.
- A good way to begin your practice when you enter is to light a candle and offer incense. This sets the intention and purifies the space with light and sweet smells.
- Do your practice, give thanks to the space and leave it clean and tidy, ready to welcome you next time.
